GP RATINGS STUDENTS AND STAFF OF SRI CHAKRA MARITIME COLLEGE, PUDUCHERRY DURING INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DRIVE (ICC 2011) – 03rd Sept 2011
More than 150 volunteers comprising Students and Staff of Sri Chakra Maritime College, Puducherry & from the general public participated enthusiastically in the International Coastal Cleanup Drive (ICC 2011) on Saturday, 03rd September 2011 to cleanup beach and coastal areas from Auroville Beach to Pondicherry Port covering a distance of 10 Km.
Professor J.A.K. Tareen, Vice Chancellor, Pondicherry University was the Chief Guest to inaugurate the Coastal Cleanup Event at Auroville Beach Front, Pondicherry at 0730 hr on 03 Sept 2011. He stressed the need to protect coastal environment and necessity to create awareness among the public to safeguard the fragile coastal environment along the Puducherry Coast. All students of 17th GP Ratings Course and Faculty members of Sri Chakra Maritime College, Puducherry volunteered to clean up the coastal belt from Auroville Beach to Puducherry Port.
Flagging off the ICC 2011 – Puducherry Coast
The activities undertaken by the volunteers include collecting of garbage / trash, etc from the Sea Coast / Beach in biodegradable bags, their proper documentation, evaluation and disposal through the local civic authorities. Also, information on protection of marine habitat / species was also gathered along the Puducherry Coast for in-depth study by the ICC Organisers. Students further interacted with local fishermen and villagers along the coast to study their socio-economic issues for projection to ICC authorities. The Indian Maritime Foundation, Chennai Branch earlier provided the Kits to the College for Collection of trash along the coast. The kits include all essential gears for trash collection, self protection devices and aids to achieve complete cleanliness along the route.

The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is an annual volunteer event worldwide to clean up the coastal areas, especially the beaches and create awareness among students and the coastal population in particular and the public in general and thus protect the fragile environment along the coast and show community support for shared natural resource of coastal habitat. The ICC 2011 was organized on 03 Sept 2011 by Indian Maritime Foundation, Chennai (the National Coordinator for India) under the overall worldwide programme of the Ocean Conservancy, USA.

The event was flagged off jointly by the Prof JAK Tareen, Vice Chancellor, Pondicherry University, Prof M Ramadass, Director (SEI & RR) of Pondicherry University and Er. Uday Mitra, the Principal, Sri Chakra Maritime College, Puducherry. Soon volunteers commenced the task of cleaning the vast coast line from Auroville Beach to the Pondicherry Port. Students distributed the pamphlets to local fisherman and villagers all along the route apart from clearing debris, wastes and garbage / trash from the sandy beach.

The ICC 2011 event undertaken by the GP Ratings Course students of Sri Chakra Maritime College along the Puducherry Coast has seen overwhelming response from the local residents, tourists and general public present along the Golden beaches of Puducherry during the forenoon hours on 03 Sept 2011.
GP Ratings Course students of the College have been encouraged by presenting them with “Appreciation Certificates” from Ocean Conservancy, USA and INDMARFCB, Chennai for their active participation in International Coastal Cleanup 2011. Hope good seeds have been sown in the young minds of budding mariners to keep the ocean pollution free and the coast clean.
